衍生自反式-4-甲氧基肉桂酸的酯是紫外线辐射的有效吸收剂。起始原料为反式-4-甲氧基肉桂酸和,5-二甲氧基苯甲酸甲酯在分离的燕麦生物碱合成中。用亚硫酰氯将反式-4-甲氧基肉桂酸转化为其酰氯（产率 98%）。用于医药中间体的有机合成，合成抗肾上腺素药物艾司洛尔，化妆品紫外线吸收。
