乙二胺四乙酸二钠盐二水合物是广泛使用的二价阳离子如 Ca+ 的螯合剂，可抑制金属离子依赖性蛋白酶如钙依赖性半胱氨酸蛋白酶。 EDTA 还充当金属蛋白酶活性位点中锌离子的螯合剂；因此它抑制需要锌才能发挥活性的金属蛋白酶。此外，EDTA 可防止血小板聚集，是血小板计数的首选抗凝剂。
