邻甲酚酞是一种可逆的 pH 指示剂。反向路径（红紫色到无色）的动力学很慢，因此使其成为检查具有波纹壁的管道中的流动模式的合适分子。它还用于通过邻甲酚酞络合酮法比色测定钙含量。在碱性条件（pH 10-1）存在下，钙与邻甲酚酞的结合导致形成在 570-575nm 处具有吸光度的红色复合物。
